The 2018 Grützner Group

Prof. Frank Grutzner

 Lab Supervisor

Frank is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

He is interested in getting a better understanding of how DNA (the genetic stuff) changes in different cells, different species and in human disease.

THE POSTDOCS

Picture

Dr. Tasman Daish

Tasman is utilising our unique access to iconic Australian mammals to investigate the role of noncoding RNAs in mammalian sex chromosome biology and reproduction.
Picture

Dr. Linda Shearwin

Linda holds a PhD in biochemistry and has worked and taught in the area of molecular and cellular biology at the Hanson Centre for Cancer Research and the University of Adelaide. She is currently studying the evolution of sex chromosomes and searching for the elusive sex determining genes in egg-laying mammals – platypus and echidna.

PHD CANDIDATES

Picture

David Stevens

David is currently writing up his thesis. His PhD project involved investigating the evolution of genes involved in inflammation, and platypus mucormycosis.
Picture

Reuben Jacob

Reuben is currently writing up his thesis while working as an Industry Development Officer at TechInSA. His project looked at the roles of different cell types involved in ovulation and the investigation of piRNAs in ovarian cancers.

Picture

Tahlia Perry

Tahlia is a final year PhD student, passionate about conservation and molecular biology – pairing these areas together to help Australia’s iconic echidnas. She has experience in wetlab procedures as well as bioinformatics and is an active science communicator and public speaker.
Picture

Eunice Lee

Eunice is a PhD student fascinated by the complex nature of cancer and keen to explore a career in the science industry. She is in progress to uncovering the role of complex pathway genes in ovarian and prostate cancer.
Picture

Natasha Bradley

Natasha is in her first year of her PhD and is not only passionate about science but also mental health and loves going to local music gigs. Currently she is investigating the function and evolution of metabolic genes in monotremes and how one of them might help treat type 2 diabetes.

Masters

Honours

Honours

Picture

Yifei Huo

Yifei is a final year Masters student who is working with Tasman to identify long non-coding RNAs in platypus with restricted expression patterns during spermatogenesis.

Praveena R G Chandrasegaran

Praveena  has recently completed her bachelors degree in biomedical science at the University of Adelaide and continued on with Honours. She is interested in studying the role of long non-coding RNAs in monotreme reproduction.
Picture

Isabella Wilson

Isabella has recently completed a double degree (Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts). Formerly the manager of communications for EchidnaCSI, she is currently undertaking her honours project where she aims to provide a first characterisation of the monotreme microbiome.
