The Grützner Group

Prof. Frank Grützner

 Lab Supervisor

Frank is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

He is interested in getting a better understanding of how DNA changes in different cells, different species and in human disease.

THE POSTDOCS

Picture

Dr. Linda Shearwin

Linda holds a PhD in biochemistry and has worked and taught in the area of molecular and cellular biology at the Hanson Centre for Cancer Research and the University of Adelaide. She is currently studying the evolution of sex chromosomes and searching for the elusive sex determining genes in egg-laying mammals – platypus and echidna.

Dr Tahlia Perry

Tahlia is a postdoctoral researcher within the Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity & Heritage. She is passionate about using unique combinations of both science and outreach for species conservation. Tahlia specialises in using genomics and citizen science to study cryptic animals. She created the national award-winning citizen science project EchidnaCSI, and is a highly sought-after science communicator.

Dr. Filip Pajpach

Filip has recently finished his PhD at the University of Adelaide and continues to investigate the evolution and organisation of monotreme sex chromosomes by utilising methods of cytogenetics, molecular biology, microscopy, and bioinformatics. He is engaged in basic research and all things chromosomes, but is also passionate about teaching and online tutoring.

PHD CANDIDATES

Picture

David Stevens

David is currently writing up his thesis. His PhD project involved investigating the evolution of genes involved in inflammation, and platypus mucormycosis.
Picture

Reuben Jacob

Reuben is currently writing up his thesis while working as an Industry Development Officer at TechInSA. His project looked at the roles of different cell types involved in ovulation and the investigation of piRNAs in ovarian cancers.
Picture

Michelle Shaw

Michelle Shaw has been the Zoo & Wildlife Nutritionist for Taronga Conservation Society Australia for the last 9 years. She is investigating aspects of echidna nutrition from glucose metabolism, milk nutrition, gastric emptying and microbiome across all life stages.

Picture

Bella Wilson

Bella's PhD research investigates the evolution of placentation and lactation in mammals by studying these genes in the monotremes. She is also researching undergraduate Genetics teaching, particularly with respect to how students conceptualise genes. She previously undertook her Honours project in the Grutzner lab where she characterised the monotreme microbiome.
Picture

Jackson Dann

Jackson's research investigates the molecular evolution of the gastrointestinal tract in echidnas and platypuses to see whether we can infer any greater patterns between them and their most recent common ancestor with all other mammals. Another aspect of the research is to determine whether any of these unique changes are applicable to drug discovery for human illnesses.

Evie Dunstan

Evie has a background in Animal Science. Her honours research project consisted of an analysis of demographic and triage assessment findings in bushfire affected koalas. She is currently untertaking a PhD in veterinary science, with the aim of uncovering the causes of a chronic kidney disease in koalas called oxalate nephrosis.
